Executive Presence: Character
When we discuss executive presence, we often refer to character. But what do we mean by ‘character’? Simply put: are we true to our values? Are our actions aligned with those values?
I believe this has interesting implications for how we present.
For example, one of my core values is integrity; from integrity, stems openness. And that openness impacts how I speak — my words need to be clear and accessible to everyone, so the audience hear and understand my every nuance. When we focus on the needs of our audience and their understanding, it impacts our content too. This is exactly why we avoid acronyms; they can exclude people unless we set them up properly. In the moment that they have to think “what does that stand for?” they’ve missed our next point. We have shut them out. Effective leaders have clear communication skills that are inclusive, not exclusive.
Our values should impact the way we speak.
So, what are your values? How might they impact the way you present? If you’d like to find out how to integrate your values into your personal delivery style, please get in touch.
